Description

LOC338651 refers to a location downstream of KRTAB5-1 and upstream of DUSP8, possibly \gene. This location was also described as part of the MOB2 gene.

The DUSP8 protein encoded by this gene is a member of the dual specificity protein phosphatase subfamily. These phosphatases inactivate their target kinases by dephosphorylating both the phosphoserine/threonine and phosphotyrosine residues. They negatively regulate members of the mitogen-activated protein (MAP) kinase superfamily (MAPK/ERK, SAPK/JNK, p38), which is associated with cellular proliferation and differentiation. Different members of the family of dual specificity phosphatases show distinct substrate specificities for various MAP kinases, different tissue distribution and subcellular localization, and different modes of inducibility of their expression by extracellular stimuli. This gene product inactivates SAPK/JNK and p38, is expressed predominantly in the adult brain, heart, and skeletal muscle, is localized in the cytoplasm, and is induced by nerve growth factor and insulin. An intronless pseudogene for DUSP8 is present on chromosome 10q11.2.

The hypothetical Refseq annotation of this gene (alias FLJ30579) completely covers the UCSC annotations of Homo sapiens KRTAP5-1/KRTAP5-2 antisense RNA 1 (KRTAP5-AS1) non-coding RNA and Homo sapiens MOB kinase activator 2 (MOB2), transcript variant 2.

At this locus, reads mapped only to first half of the gene. There, a 5 fold (readcount: ca. 10 to ca. 600) upregulated expression can be observed for in human cells 23 h after Ebola infection. It is unclear if it corresponds to the gene or the antisense ncRNA, but is correlated with an even more upregulated expression (20 fold) of an upstream located gene annotated by UCSC as DUSP8 gene.
