Description
The protein encoded by this gene is a member of the TNF-receptorsuperfamily. This receptor is expressed preferentially in the tissuesenriched in lymphocytes, and it may play a role in regulating lymphocytehomeostasis. This receptor has been shown to stimulate NF-kappa B activityand regulate cell apoptosis. The signal transduction of this receptor ismediated by various death domain containing adaptor proteins. Knockoutstudies in mice suggested the role of this gene in the removal ofself-reactive T cells in the thymus. Multiple alternatively splicedtranscript variants of this gene encoding distinct isoforms have beenreported, most of which are potentially secreted molecules. The alternativesplicing of this gene in B and T cells encounters a programmed change uponT-cell activation, which predominantly produces full-length, membrane boundisoforms, and is thought to be involved in controlling lymphocyteproliferation induced by T-cell activation.
This gene was found to be with very low expression in human cells probes, no homolog was found in bat cells.
