Description
Mutations in this gene lead to tuberous sclerosis complex. Its gene product is believed to be a tumor suppressor and is able to stimulate specific GTPases. The protein associates with hamartin in a cytosolic complex, possibly acting as a chaperone for hamartin. Alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants encoding different isoforms.
This gene is moderately expressed in human cells in all conditions. It is downregulated in the Marburg infected 23 h probe, but upregulated in the Ebola infected 23 h probe. A homolog was found in bat cells, but it is not expressed at all. However, there are $\sim$300 reads in the 5' region of the bat cells homolog. This region matches to the second exon of TSC2 in human cells.
