Description
This gene encodes a putative cation-selective ion channel with two repeats of a six-transmembrane-domain. The protein localizes to lysosomal membranes and enables nicotinic acid adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NAADP) -induced calcium ion release from lysosome-related stores. This ubiquitously expressed gene has elevated expression in liver and kidney. No differential expression changes were observed within human and bat cell lines between the different time points and infection states. Nevertheless, the ion channel encoded by this gene was recently reported as an important entry point for EBOV (Falzarano and Feldmann, February 2015, Science Virology). In the \textttDESeq expression data an overall higher expression of TPCN2 could be observed compared to the bat cell line, which could be one reason for the slower replication start of the filoviruses in bats compared to human.
