Description
The protein encoded by this gene belongs to the EGR family of C2H2-type zinc-finger proteins. It is a nuclear protein and functions as a transcriptional regulator. The products of target genes it activates are required for differentiation and mitogenesis. Studies suggest this is a cancer suppressor gene.
The early growth response protein 1 (EGR-1) is a transcription factor which is highly up-regulated in EBOV-infected cells (human: 20X, bat: 2.5X). EGR-1 may be up-regulated by a variety of stimuli including MAPKs as MAPK14, \update and MAPK1 [Hsia \emph, 2013, 3:706-723] then it functions as a convergence point for many signaling pathways leading to regulations of proliferation as well as apoptosis [Pagel and Deindl, J Biochem Biophys, 2011, 48:226-235]. Target genes are tissue factor, vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGFA) and intercellular adhesion molecule 1 (ICAM1), proteins that are common in organ injury [Ngiam et al., Am J Physiol Lung Cell Mol Physiol}, 2007, 293:L1089-1091]. Furthermore it is known that viral infections, as lytic HSV-1 infection induce EGR-1 expression in infected cells and that this seems to enhance viral replication [Bedadala et al., Virol J, 2011, 8:262; Hsia et al., Br Microbiol Res J}, 2013, 3:706-723].
The gene overlaps with LOC100652898.
